How to store an engine

Introduction

In this post on How to store an engine, we will discuss the engine’s procedure. We will discuss the guidelines on How to store an engine in an easy-to-understand language.

Preparation before storing an Engine

Preservation of a Diesel Engine (How to store an engine)

The engine’s Preservation is carried out to protect against corrosion before engine delivery, storage, before initial starting, and long time standstill of the engine.

1. Cooling Water System

2. Fuel Oil System

3. Lubricating Oil System

4. Combustion Chamber

5. Intake Air Chamber

6. External Machined Surface

7. The Others.

A. Cooling Water System

  1. Drain the cooling water from the High Temperature, Low-Temperature and cooling water system
  2. Charge air cooler
  3. Lube oil cooler,
  4. Then blow air from inlet to outlet of cooling water piping system to remove the remaining water.
  5. Spray the corrosion inhibitor into the system as deeply as using an air-gun or similar after removing impurities, rust, etc. And then seal up those systems with blind covers to prevent the loss of vapor.
  6. Discharge the air in the system and fill the nitrogen gas to 1bar.

B. Fuel Oil System

Drain the fuel oil thoroughly from the piping system and fuel oil filter.

C. Lubricating Oil System

  1. Drain the lubricating oil from the system, including the cooler and filter.
  2. Clean up the inside of the crankcase and oil sump tank.

Coat the following components with a lubricity rust preventative agent < BW-70PSJ, Mobilux EP 004(Mobilplex44) or similar >.

1. Crankcase inside,

2. Connecting Rod,

3. Crankshaft –

4. Piston lower,

5. Cylinder Liner and

6. Camshaft,

7. Cam Roller and Chamber inside –

8. Gear Train and chamber inside –

9. Cylinder Head Top Cover inside and Rocker Gear

The rust protection oil should also have proper lubricity as lubricating oil and not deteriorate.

Moreover, even if mixed with the system oil during engine running, the system lubricating oil’s fundamental properties causing any possible defect of the machine moving parts.

Pay close attention to use an excellent product if a similar one is chosen.

D. Combustion Chamber

Inject corrosion prevents fluid < BW-70PSJ, Mobilarama524, or similar > in a quantity of 0.5 liters per cylinder into the combustion chambers through the indicator valves turn the crankshaft by 2~3 revolutions.

E. Intake Air Chamber

Spray the volatile corrosion inhibitor < VCiR-3P or similar(VpCI-377)> into the system as deeply as possible (effective distance of the vapor is under 30cm) by using an air-gun or similar after removing impurities, rust, etc. And then seal up those systems with blind covers to prevent the loss of vapor. A dose of volatile corrosion inhibitor is usually 50~100g per 1m3, but it would be changeable depending on the period of Preservation, method of packing, temperature, humidity, and grade of sealing.

F. External Machined Surface (How to store an engine)

Clean up all unpainted areas of external machined surfaces and then coat them with a protective agent layer < TECTYL-506, Mobilarma 247, or similar >.

G. The Others

  1. Grease all hinging parts with < Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease or similar >, and apply protective agent < TECTYL-506, Mobilarma 247 or similar > to the rest parts of control linkage between the fuel pumps and governor after thoroughly cleaning up.
  2. Seal up the turbocharger gas outlet with a plate. Keep the turbocharger drain valve open.
  3. Cover up the turbocharger air filter with a sheet.
  4. Seal up all opening parts of the piping system with a plastic cap or blind cover.
  5. Check the sealed condition of the packing and gland seals of the electric control and terminal boxes.
  6. A dose of volatile corrosion inhibitor is usually 50~100g per 1m3, but it would be changeable depending on the period of Preservation, method of packing, temperature, humidity, and grade of sealing.

Storage (How to store an engine)

  1. In principle, the engine should be kept under the nice airy roof with removing waterproof tarpaulin wrapped during delivery.
  2. Drain the cooling water from the HT-and LT[1]system, including the charge air cooler and lube oil cooler, by opening all coolers’ drain valves to prevent the coolers from possible frozen damage.
  3. Do not open the blind covers of the cooling water line until the engine stating to keep the sealed condition except in case of the addition of a Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. The caution stickers apply to the blind cover contained the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor.

Storage -Preservation Under three months (How to store an engine)

  1. Fill up the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor < VCiR[1]3L or similar(VpCI-329) > into the sump tank as much as below before storing.
  2. Fill up the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor < VCiR[1]3P or similar(VpCI-377)> into the blind covers of H.T & L.T Water In/Outlet Line and Cyl. Head & Water Guide Jacket of the last cylinder as much as below.
  3. The Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor preserves the anticorrosion performance in water dissolved conditions, but it works best in the solid powder state. Therefore, when inserting the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor, please keep it away from any water that has not been drained to preserve its solid powder state.

Storage–Preservation over three months

  1. Fill up the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor into the sump tank as much as below once in 3 months.
  2. Fill up the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor into the blind covers of H.T & L.T Water In/Outlet Line and Cyl. Head & Water Guide Jacket of the last cylinder as much as below.
  3. Check the painting condition once a month, and repair if necessary.
  4. After opening up all covers of the crankcase, camshaft, gearcase, and cylinder heads check if any corroded part is founded on the crank chamber, cylinder Liner, piston, connecting rod, crankshaft, cam, gears, rocker arm, and other engine moving components, once in 3 months. If corrosion is developed, coat a protective oil after thoroughly rubbing off the rust.
  5. After checking up the corroded parts, inject corrosion preventing fluid in a quantity of 0.5 liters per cylinder into the combustion chambers through the indicator valves. Then, turn the crankshaft by 2~3 revolutions.

Removal of Preservation before Initial Starting

  1. Clean up the outside of the engine with turpentine or petroleum.
  2. It is not necessary to remove Preservation oil-coated inside of a machine.
  3. It is not required to remove the liquefied Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor inside the sump tank and Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (white powder) inside the cooling water system.
  4. It is not necessary to obstinately remove the correction protection fluids applied on the engine system’s inner side, which could mixable with the system media.
  5. Open the cover for the air chamber and clean up the Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor inside of it.

Preservation of Tool and Spare Part (How to store an engine)

  1. The anticorrosion for tools and spare parts should be treated in accordance with “Quality Specification” and instruction of its drawing.
  2. Preservation of Tool and Spare Part
  3. Store tools and spare parts in-house or waterproof box. Storage boxes should be packed with waterproof tarpaulin when the storage box is left outdoor or in the open-air yard.
  4. Cleaning for tools and spare parts can be made with petroleum or a similar cleaning solvent.
  5. Tools and spare parts should be kept in lubricating oil or covered with grease for short time storage.
